Ultrasonic welding is an industrial process whereby high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations are locally applied to workpieces being held together under pressure to create a solid-state weld. It is commonly used for plastics and metals, and especially for joining dissimilar materials.

Rotary ultrasonic bonding is the process of using high-frequency compression/relaxation of materials against specially designed anvil patterns that cause them to heat at the molecular level and melt. This process enables the materials to flow around the shapes of the anvil and adhere to each other and to other materials that are in the web matrix.

A strong, reliable molecular bond is formed between the layers. Nearly all packaging materials and laminates, with a thermoplastic sealing layer or coating, are suitable for the ultrasonic sealing (welding) process.
