What is Electromagnetic Separator?

An electromagnetic separator is an industrial device that uses an electrically generated magnetic field to remove ferrous metal contaminants from non-magnetic bulk materials.
 
Working Principle
  • Energizing: Direct current (DC) passes through an internal copper or aluminum coil to create a powerful magnetic field.
  • Extraction: As raw materials pass underneath, iron contaminants (like nails, bolts, or tramp iron) are instantly lifted and held against the magnet face.
  • Discharge: Captured metals are removed from the product stream either automatically or by turning off the power to kill the magnetic field.
 
Key Types
  • Self-Cleaning (Overband): Features a moving belt around the magnet that automatically flings trapped metal into a collection bin. Best for high-volume, continuous production.
  • Manual Cleaning (Suspended Block): Hangs statically over a conveyor. Operators must periodically turn off the power to let the accumulated metal drop. Best for low-iron environments.
  • Wet/Dry Matrix Filters: High-intensity systems (up to 20,000 Gauss) used to clean liquid slurries or fine powders, such as lithium battery materials or ceramics.

  • Equipment Protection: Used in mining, cement, and coal plants to catch large steel scrap before it damages expensive crushers and conveyor belts.
  • Product Purification: Used in food, pharma, and chemical industries to remove microscopic iron flakes and ensure strict quality control.
  • Recycling: Used in municipal waste and e-waste facilities to automatically sort and recover valuable ferrous metals.

  • Easy Maintenance: Releasing heavy trapped iron requires just a flick of a switch rather than manual scraping.
