Fiber Classification

Natural fibers

There are two main types:

  1. Animal (Protein): Wool, Cashmere, Mohair,Yak, Camel Hair, Alpaca, Liama,Qiviut, Vicuna, Silk, Angora,Horsehair
  2. Plant(Cellulose): Cotton, Flax, Coir, Hemp, Jute, Ramie,Bamboo,Sisal, Abaca, Kapok

Natural fibers are derived from either animals or plants, such as bask, skin, seeds or shells.

Regenerated(Semi-synthetic) fiber

  1. Manufactured cellulosic fibers: Soybean protein, Milk casein
  2. Manufactured protein fibers:Rayon, Acetate

Regenerated(semi-synthetic) fibers are derived from natural resoures and go through an intensive chemical transformation process.

Synthetic fibers

  1. Synthetic fibers: Polyster, Nylon(Polyamide), Spandex, Olefin (Polyprolylene PP), Acrylic, Aramids, PVC( Polyvinyl Chloride)

Most polymers are similar to compounds that make up plastics, rubber, and coatings, and are developed through polymerization-a chemical process combining small molecules into polymers.
