Carryduff Building Supplies opened its doors in 1984 under its
former name Farm Feeds and Supplies. The owner, John Gilliland, a
farmer at the time, started to sell agricultural supplies to local
farmers which then gradually expanded to include building materials
and supplies. As agricultural supplies started taking more of a
back seat, in 1997 the name of the company was changed to Carryduff
Building Supplies to reflect the true nature of what the business
As a company which is always moving forward, in 1997 a ready mix
concrete plant was installed to allow an even greater service to
customers for their building needs. At this time, concrete precast
manufacture started in a small way with just a few individual hand
filled moulds. However, with the construction industry booming in
the early 2000s there was yet again more expansion when the company
installed an automated pre-cast unit, which allowed mass production
of concrete products.
With the success of the pre-cast production facility, it made sense
to start manufacturing concrete blocks and bricks so in 2006 a
Finlay block making and strapping machine were installed.
In 2012, right in the middle of the recession, the company took the
bold step of installing a new pre-cast production facility, housed
in a new purpose built 900m2 further diversify the range of
products on offer.
The company is still thriving despite the downturn in the
construction industry over the past few years which is highly
attributed to the fact it is a proper family business” as John and
Shirley Gilliland are assisted in the running of the company by two
of their sons, Andrew & Richard. With a current team of around
20 staff and 9 lorries, the premises now covers a 6.5 acre site and
sells the majority of products required for the construction,
landscaping and DIY markets.
The company ethos is small enough to care, big enough to cope”,
which we believe has helped us maintain our place as one of the
most reliable and proficient builder’s merchants that currently
operates in the greater Belfast area.
