ENUGU — GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime, of Enugu State yesterdaypromised to provide ‘adequate’ security surveillancefor telecommunications facilities in the state even as CeltelNigeria, one of the country’’s leading mobile operatorscommissioned its multi-million Naira South East switch station atthe state capital.

The governor, who came to the event dressed in grey suit 24 hoursbefore the hearing of the Court of Appeal on his 2007 election,stated that it is a “pride to Enugu that Celtel has sited thefacility in the state coming few months after Globacom built asimilar project here”.
On our part, I promised that the government of Enugu State willprovide adequate security protection for all telecommunicationsfacilities in the state”.
He also commended the mobile operator for siting the project inEnugu. According to Lars Stock, Chief Operating Officer, CeltelNigeria, the South East switch station which cost $7million(approximately N819, 000, 000) has “capacity to take up toone million subscribers”. According to Stocks, Celtel hopesto increase our subscriber capacity from 10 million to 20 millionby end of 2008.
We are also hoping to complete our 4000 Kilometre fibre opticbackbone network in Nigeria by the end of the first quarter of2009. “We are also expanding our microwave backbone facilityfrom 3000 Km to 5000 Km”.
