The Race Day in detail
Extensive driver and safety briefing
Due to the speeds and the challenge of driving our cars, the Race Day programme is specifically designed with safety as its top priority. Our focus on safety maximises the thrill of your racing adventure.
Introduction to the racing cars
As these are real race cars with very different controls to a road car, the drivers will need to become thoroughly familiarised.
Sighting laps
Drivers are taken on sighting laps to get used to the track. In this section, we extend the driver training and explain the racing line, brake points, turn-in points, apexes, and corner exits.
Getting kitted up
Being safe and comfortable is vital to enhancing the overall experience. On the Race Day we supply each driver with a helmet, balaclava, race overalls, gloves and racing boots.
Seat fitting
This is the moment that every driver has been waiting for. Its the first time that they will sit in a world-class single-seater race car. Every driver is a different size, and must be fitted into the cars to ensure safety and comfort. Please note: there is a maximum height restriction of 1.95m (64) and weight restriction of 140kgs (22 stone).
Racing
Confidence is essential when driving these cars. This develops by gradually building up the drivers speeds with warm up laps behind a pace car. This ensures that drivers learn and experience the unforgettable thrill of single-seater racing as safely as possible.
Once the driver is up to speed literally they then do four sessions of 15 minutes each. In between, drivers rest and re-hydrate. They also receive training and a chance to examine their performance. Drivers spend around one hour driving in their dedicated car. This may not seem a lot, but it is a long time in a race car. Remember, experienced and extremely fit F1 drivers do about an hour and a half of driving per F1 event!
The Cars
You will be driving authentic racing cars. The cars are built by Reynard, who also constructed the original F1 Honda BAR cars. They were built for the feeder series to Champ Cars in the US (think how GP2 is to F1). With full race configuration and a V6 Dodge engine (that are specially tuned so that they are safe for novices), these cars pull 450 BHP/per tonne. Each car has a carbon fibre chassis and is built to FIA safety standards. This means they have safety standards to similar F1 cars. This is a very different experience from driving an everyday road car!
The Race Tracks
Adventure Bookings currently holds its exciting racing events on four different race circuits: one in Cape Town, and three in Johannesburg.
Cape Town
Killarney
Adventure Bookings is based at Killarney in Cape Town.
In 1960, Killarneys 3.6km track hosted the F1 Cape Grand Prix. Since then it has developed every facet of circuit racing, including Motocross, Karting, Super Motards, Stock Cars and Drag Racing but most importantly, Adventure Bookings!
Killarney is a great, fairly uncomplicated track and is ideal for novices. It also has a stunning view of Table Mountain and is only 20-30 minutes from the citys centre.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg offers three circuit options, depending on availability.
Kyalami
Kyalami is a world class classic F1 race track with a wealth of motor sport history. It provides an amazing challenge that continues to test the skill of the worlds top racing drivers. Situated in Midrand (mid-way between Johannesburg and Pretoria/Tswane), Kyalami is easy to get to.
Westbank
WesBank is a modern track with a large banked oval circuit in the American racing style. WesBank is a good choice for the racers to experience thrill of the fast straights before the tight sections that lead into the vast flowing curves youre gonna love it! WesBank is situated close to Johannesburg International Airport, proving an ideal location for international or regional visitors.
Zwartkops
Sited at Midrand, between Johannesburg and Pretoria, this phenomenal track is small in terms of length; Zwartkops is not short in terms of racing challenge. The Big Z is a real favourite! It is perfect for hosting one-day corporate events as its an easier circuit to learn in one day it also has excellent entertainment facilities!Additional useful information
Weather
We need to ensure that all events are safe. Weather can materially affect the safety of these race cars. In the event of heavy rain, and occasionally damp conditions, it may be prudent to cancel the event on the grounds of safety. As a result, Adventure Bookings must consider the potential conditions and forecast weather when booking the events to avoid any risk of unnecessary cancellations.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg has excellent winters that are ideal for motor racing. The Joburg winter days are sunny with limited risk of rain, but can get cold at night. Racing in Johannesburg in winter is an excellent option. During the summer, it traditionally rains in the late afternoon. For this reason we start early and get the racing completed before the rain begins. This allows for a full days racing
Cape Town
Cape winters are generally wet. These conditions are not recommended for novices in single-seater race cars! When discussing the various options with our international guests, we recommend that they only
race in Cape Town in summer, when there is minimal risk of rain. So its best for international guests to come from mid-September to mid- May.
Clothing
We are always asked about what clothes people should bring with them. As we provide all the race wear we recommend attendees bring:
Running (sports) shoes
Socks
Shorts
T-shirts
Jersey in winter
Cap (for sun protection)
Safety at the track
Safety is a top priority for Adventure Bookings. All attendees must attend driver and safety briefings in advance of the event. As detailed above, the race programmes include extensive driver and safety briefings. In addition, we have medically-trained marshals at the track and, just in case, an ambulance on stand by. Each car has a Monocoque Chassis, which is tested to the FIA standards. This makes them one of the safest race cars in the world.
