Phosphor Copper is used as a master alloy for the addition of phosphorous during the production of phosphorous bearing alloys and is a benefical addition to copper base brazing alloys where the phosphorous lowers the melting point and prevents undue oxidation during brazing.
Phosphor Copper is also used as a deoxidant for copper and copper alloys, in which high conductivity is not a requirement, particularly gunmetal, tin bronze and copper tube where enough phosphor copper is added to the melt, just prior to pouring, to residual phosphorous content of about 0.02%. Phosphous also has the additional function of markedly fluidity, thereby allowing greatly reduces pouring temperatures.
