General Description
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carriers liquefied natural gas at an extremely low temperature of -163 °C in specially designed cargo containments. Various incidents on an LNG carrier may lead to serious accidents like fire or explosion. Should any dangerous situations occur during LNG cargo loading or unloading at a terminal, the operation and related equipment should be stopped. A series of action to be made upon occurrence or detection of any hazardous situations are programmed into the emergency shutdown (ESD) system to be supplied by Simulation Tech Inc. (STI). STI possess extensive experience about LNGC ESD system through many project references.
Technical Specification
ESD system is a system independent of Integrated Automation System (IAS), which is connected to the IAS for normal operation of ESD valves, monitoring and alarm through serial communication and/or hardwires. The ESD system includes TPS (Tank Protection System) logic as well as the shutdown logic itself. Main components of STI ESD system are,

Fusible Metal Boxes

Functional Description
Main function of an ESD system is receiving various causes for shutdown, and generating appropriate actions accordingly. Following is a list of action groups programmed within the ESD system. Details in individual groups can vary depending on each project.

This cabinet is the center of ESD system functionality. It includes all the cause & effect of ESD functions in the PLC.
Redundantly configured PLC System - PLC CPU Redundancy - Network Redundancy
IS Barriers used for IS Zone Signal Processing - AI Module for a pressure transmitter in Pressure Transmitter Box for ESDS - DI Modules for Push Button Switch Boxes and
Fusible Metal Boxes - DO Modules for air releasing solenoid valve in Solenoid Valve Box for ESDS - UPS supply AC power when normal source AC power is off.
It is installed in Electric Equipment Room(EER)

System Cabinet
# Air Control Board
Dimension: 1100(W) X 900(H) X 250(D)
The Air Control Board (ACB) controls the airpressure ofShip/Shore PneumaticESD Link Line at apredefined set-point,so-called "NormalPressure" that is set from CCR Console.
Air pressure is maintained using "On/Off" actions of solenoid valves.
It is installed in Electric Equipment Room (EER)

Air Control Board
# Fusible Metal Boxes
Dimension: 150(W) X 150(H) X 80(D)
Fusible Metal Boxes include Fusible Plugs that melts when surrounding temperature becomes higherthan 98 °C . When they melt, ESD action is initiated. These boxes have IP rating of IP56
These boxes are installed in various locations onboard: cargo tank liquid dome top, shore connection are, cargocompressor room,andelectric motor room.
Material: SUS316L.

Fusible Metal Boxes
# Push Button Switch Boxes
Dimension: 200(W) X 200(H) X 182(D)
Each of the boxes includes a manual push button switch to trigger ESD actions upon detection of emergency incidents. IP rating of the manual push button switch is IP66.
These boxes are installed in various locations onboard: liquid dome, shore connection areas (PORT, STBD), forward area, cargocompressor room, electric motor room, and fire control station.
Material: SUS316L.

# Pressure Transmitter Box For ESDS

A pressure transmitter in theenclosure measures theair pressure of Ship/Shore Pneumatic Link Line. If the pressure is lower than the set point of trip pressure which can be set on CCR Console, ESD will be initiated. This is a means to detect ESD condition on shore side, and pass the information to the ESD system onboard. IP rating of the box is IP56.
It is located in passage way classified as an Intrinsically Safety Zone.
Material: STEEL(SS41).

Pressure Transmitter Box

A solenoid valve in the enclosure is releases the air in Ship/Shore Pneumatic ESD Link Line to inform shore side that the ship is in ESD condition. IP rating of the box is IP56.
It is located in passage pay that is classified as an Intrinsically Safety Zone.
Material: STEEL(SS41).
